100 Years of Cub Scouts

Scouts were formed in 1907, but the demand by the younger brothers of the Scouts resulted in the launch of Wolf Cubs on 16 December 1916.

Move on 100 years, and the Cub Scouts of the world came together to celebrate.

A Year Full of Fun!

What a year we had…

* Leicestershire Cubs set us all a series of 100 challenges to complete each term.

* There was a special screening of the Jungle Book just for Cubs & their families at cinemas across the UK.

* We sent the Queen a birthday card for her 90th birthday – & had a thank you back.

* We had an amazing county Cub camp with over 1000 Cubs from across Leicestershire at Mallory Park.

* The finale was a huge party held at Donington Park on 16 December, where everyone renewed their promise and we attempted to break the world record for the number of people singing “Oops upside your head” at once with over 1000 taking part!

Charnwood International Camp

Or, as it was popularly nicknamed, “Charnmud” , the camp unlike any other!

Charnwood International Scout & Guide Camp is run approximately every 4 years in Leicestershire, attracting thousands from across the globe. The 2019 camp held at Cattows Farm will go down in the history books as the wettest & muddiest in living memory…

Our intrepid leaders took 20 Ashby Hastings Scouts for what had promised to be an amazing 1 week camp, on the Fire subcamp. We had been concerned that the ground would be so hard that pitching tents would be difficult. Well, that didn’t last long. The torrential rain turned the site into a mud bath, with organisers working flat out to provide shovels to dig channels & source & lay large quantities of straw in the worst affected areas.

Our Scouts managed to have a great time, some even declaring it the best camp ever! All credit to our leaders for keeping morale high and everyone safe. One Scout even featured in the interview

with Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, when he dropped in for a visit. Watch it here on our YouTube channel .

The camp organisers took the difficult decision to close camp early on the Thursday, and one of our leaders who’s a police sergeant was able to organise a police van to evacuate the troop! The early close caused problems for all the groups who’d travelled some distance who weren’t able to reorganise their travel, so local groups stepped up to host them. We welcomed Dalgety Bay Guides and Rangers for a few days, who enjoyed the dry conditions of our Scout hut.

NW Leicestershire Local Hero Award

We were absolutely thrilled to have been nominated as a local hero as part of the district council’s efforts to acknowledge those members of the community who have gone over

and beyond to support families during the pandemic.

“Ashby Hastings Scout Group are North West Leicestershire Heroes for helping to keep members

active during lockdown and keeping children going through a difficult time. Thank you for your hard work.” Keeping Scouting going remotely over Zoom – that technology that few had heard of before 2020 –was a tough challenge.
